Burj al-Barajneh: On the occasion of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, the Women and Girls Protection Network organised an interactive seminar and open discussion under the title “Safety and Security for Women, Girls, and Children of Gaza to Implement UN Security Council Resolution 1325.” The event was attended by local institutions, NGOs, women’s committees, and activists from the community.

Ms. Fatima Al-Ashwah, coordinator of the Association Najdeh  Women’s and Girls’ Rights Programme in Burj al-Barajneh, welcomed the attendees and emphasised the important role of women in society and the workforce. She delivered a statement on behalf of the network:

“While the global women’s movement commemorates the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women from 25 November to 10 December, we witness the ongoing complicity of most Western countries and the division within international institutions regarding the massacres, genocide, and ethnic cleansing faced by women, girls, children, and the Palestinian people in Gaza, the West Bank, and Jerusalem. The prevalence of double standards and the contradictory handling of human rights, women’s rights, and international conventions related to these rights are evident. This is not only in the context of Palestinian women’s right to life but also the right of the entire Palestinian population to exist. It seems the right to life and protection from genocide has become a subject of debate and interpretation, marked by double standards.”

Lawyer Ghada Nicola from the Lebanese Democratic Women’s Gathering discussed international conventions related to rights and UN Security Council Resolution 1325. Dr. Aziza Al-Khalidi, an advisor on gender issues, highlighted the national milestones in the history of refugees and Palestinian women, shedding light on the “catastrophic” conditions experienced by women during the war on Gaza.

There were several contributions and discussions on the importance of developing a plan to implement women’s rights at political and public levels and to address challenges. The event also included national, heritage, and folkloric activities.

Security and Safety: 16 Days Campaign to Combat Violence Against Women and Girls

in Latest news

07/12/2023

The Women’s and Girls’ Protection Network launched the “16 Days Campaign to Combat Violence Against Women and Girls” themed “Security and Safety for Women, Girls, and Children of Gaza” to enforce UN Security Council Resolution 1325. This campaign targets Palestinian camps and communities in Lebanon, where violence against women and girls has spread like a plague, especially in recent years, with the number of survivors doubling due to the COVID-19 pandemic, regional conflicts, climate change, and economic crises associated with wars and conflicts. Given all these factors, the lack of security and safety for Palestinian women and girls has worsened. The situation has become even more complex this year due to the lack of access to livelihoods, social and humanitarian protection for Palestinian women, not only in Lebanon but also in Gaza, the West Bank, and occupied Jerusalem. Issues of equality, violence, and discrimination are no longer just causes to be raised and demanded an end to; now, the pressing issues for Palestinian women are their survival and protection from death, displacement, and forced migration.

As the global women’s movement commemorates the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women from November 25 to December 10, we witness the continued complicity of most Western countries and the division of international institutions regarding the massacres, genocide, and ethnic cleansing faced by women, girls, children, and the Palestinian people in Gaza and the West Bank, including Jerusalem. Double standards and hypocrisy in dealing with human rights, women’s rights, and international conventions related to these rights have prevailed, affecting not only Palestinian women but also the entire Palestinian people’s right to life. The right to life and survival from genocide has become a topic subject to debate and interpretation, highlighting the double standards.

Let us come together on this day, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence and Discrimination Against Women and Girls, to uphold the right to life and protection from genocide and ethnic cleansing. We stand against the crimes committed by the Israeli apartheid regime against the Palestinian people, women, girls, and children in Gaza, the West Bank, and Jerusalem. This year, let us unite against the double standards in human rights for women and peoples and demand a ceasefire in Gaza, providing humanitarian protection for women, girls, and children, and ensuring a dignified life by lifting the full blockade on Gaza.

Let us join forces and call on the United Nations Security Council for immediate intervention to protect women, ceasefire implementation, and achieve security and safety for Palestinian women and children by enforcing Security Council Resolution 1325. There is no security without justice for peoples and women, and no safety without the security of peoples and women. The international community, including the Security Council, must fulfil their roles established for protecting peoples, preventing war crimes, and bringing perpetrators to justice.

This year, we rise together against injustice, aggression, and genocidal wars, against the double standards of Western countries and international institutions. As Palestinian women, we demand the implementation of international decisions related to our national and human rights.

The Women’s and Girls’ Protection Network in Palestinian camps and communities in Lebanon comprises local and international institutions and associations working to defend women’s and girls’ rights and provide services related to these rights. It includes active stakeholders and decision-makers at the local Palestinian community level in Lebanon. The network aims to coordinate and collaborate to provide necessary psychological, social, and legal services and interventions for women survivors of violence within a joint work system that obliges all members. This system references international agreements and conventions related to women’s rights and their protection from all forms of violence, discrimination, and neglect.

“Stop the Aggression, Lift the Siege” Protest in Front of ESCWA Building in Beirut

“Stop the Aggression, Lift the Siege” Protest in Front of ESCWA Building in Beirut

in Latest news

30/11/2023

In solidarity with the women and children of Palestine and under the slogan “Stop the Aggression, Lift the Siege,” a group of associations, networks, and Arab coalitions opposing violence against women called for a unified Arab stand in more than eight Arab countries on 29 November 2023 in front of UN buildings. They demanded that the United Nations take responsibility and work to stop the genocide and war crimes committed by the Zionist entity against civilians in the resilient Gaza Strip and the West Bank.

Ms. Zoya Rouhana, Director of the KAFA organisation, delivered the Arab movement’s address. They called on the United Nations and relevant parties to pressure for an immediate halt to the aggression and the war of extermination on the Gaza Strip, ensuring the protection of all civilians, with special protection for women and children based on international humanitarian law, and holding the occupation accountable for its crimes, especially the use of internationally banned weapons.

Furthermore, they demanded the lifting of collective punishments and the siege on Palestinians in Gaza, ensuring the delivery of humanitarian aid and the fuel necessary to operate service and humanitarian facilities, restoring electricity and water, and allowing the evacuation of the wounded.

UN institutions must take responsibility for providing protection and relief to Gaza’s residents. Ms. Silvana Lakkis, representing local associations organising the protest, emphasised in her speech: “On the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People, we join our voices with women’s coalitions and networks in the Arab region. We call on the international civil society, which has expressed support for the Palestinian people, to translate this support into action for the reconstruction of Gaza’s health, educational, and cultural facilities. This requires a plan for rebuilding what the aggression has destroyed and an early recovery plan to ensure that displaced people return to their homes and urban environments. We stress the rights of those injured and disabled by the aggression and call for providing support for them to live with dignity and independence, obliging the criminal entity to provide fair compensation so they can continue their lives.”

Ms. Bouthaina Saad of Association Najdeh also spoke, demanding that the humanitarian truce in Gaza be turned into a permanent ceasefire and that the occupation forces withdraw from Gaza and all the occupied Palestinian territories of 1967. She also called for the prosecution of those responsible for the genocide and their accomplices.

The protest concluded with a speech by a Lebanese girl from the Democratic Women’s Gathering, addressing the children of Palestine. She said: “I speak to you today with a heart heavy with the suffering and injustice faced by the innocent children of Gaza who have been deprived of their basic rights to safety, education, and a peaceful childhood.” She added, “Dear children of Gaza, I want you to know that you are not alone. Your resilience in the face of occupation is an inspiration to us all.”

Additionally, a parallel virtual protest was organised by the Noon Solidarity Feminist Group via Zoom. Women and mothers from rural and peripheral areas of Lebanon were invited to raise their voices, during which the unified statement was read out.

Beirut: Associations and NGOs organised a solidarity sit-in with Gaza in front of the ESCWA building, demanding “an end to the genocide in Gaza, as they are partners in committing this genocide, and it is their responsibility to stop it.” This was held on the occasion of the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People, with wide public participation. After welcoming the attendees, Ms. Leila Al Ali, Director of Association Najdeh, delivered a speech, saying, “Nearly fifty days of genocide against Gaza, during which all internationally prohibited acts have been committed, targeting civilians, children, women, the elderly, medical and international crews, and even UN centres, and using all internationally banned weapons.

Nearly fifty days of genocide that could not have continued with such brutality without the green light given by Western countries, the United Nations, and the official silence of some Arab countries to the colonial, Nazi, Israeli army occupying Palestine.

Fifty days of genocide, during which we recently celebrated the International Day for the Rights of the Child, to affirm the commitment to the International Convention on the Rights of the Child, which all countries of the world have ratified, except the world’s first democracy, the United States of America, which has not ratified many international treaties. Perhaps America considers itself the master of the world and above international law, as does its protégé, Israel. Meanwhile, most Western countries view us as the Third World, where our blood, homes, land, and sky are expendable, and it is acceptable for Gaza’s children to collect the remains of their bodies and their families from their homes, playgrounds, and UN centres.

Tomorrow, we mark the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, which will be celebrated by UN agencies and women worldwide, except for the women and girls of Gaza and Palestine, who are subjected to the most horrific violence, crimes, and state terrorism by the forces of the Zionist occupation state.

You, who have given the occupation state the green light to commit its genocidal massacres against our people, you are partners in these unforgivable crimes, which will be recorded in the history of your democracy and your false human rights. Know that our blood is not to be shed; the blood of Gaza’s children and people will hold you accountable at your ballot boxes and by your peoples who stand in solidarity with us.

You, who have stained your hands with the blood of our children, women, and people in Gaza, know that your double-standard, hypocritical democracies and human rights have fallen on the altar of humanity in Gaza.

Know that the blood of our people in Gaza is but a beacon lighting our path to freedom and liberation, and to the shameful expulsion of the occupier, supported by your imperialism. No matter how much you support them with weapons and money, they will be driven out of our land, sky, and sea, dragging the tails of defeat and disgrace behind them.

Know that we, the people of Palestine, and the children of Palestine, are the ones who are creating a new history for this region, a history illuminated by the highest meanings of humanity, civilization, and justice, in contrast to a new region you want, submissive to your colonialism and Nazism.

Know that history will not repeat itself, and we will not allow another Nakba or setback. The land is our land, and our people will not leave it, nor will they allow the passage of displacement and resettlement projects, or any alternative homeland, or any government that comes on the back of occupation tanks, supported by your imperialism and the states biased towards this occupation.

To all international bodies, we say: All your charters that talk about equality and human rights have fallen on the altar of the bloodshed of Gaza’s children, so do not preach to us about those charters anymore, because we are the ones who will create our own charters, we are the ones who will teach our children the meaning of equality and justice that will bring our people their freedom, independence, and return. We are the ones who will teach our children and women the meaning of civilization, equality, and participation in our national struggle against the colonial occupier, in the face of your double-standard and false human rights.

To the world, we say, as the roaring peoples in the public squares have said since the start of the war on Gaza: It is not just Gaza’s battle, but the battle of the Palestinian people aspiring for freedom and independence. We will not stop our struggle until the siege on Gaza is lifted, and until we gain our national rights of return, an independent state, and self-determination, and until the dismantling of the Israeli apartheid system, including its settlements, is achieved.

Work with us and press for turning this humanitarian truce in Gaza into a permanent ceasefire and for the withdrawal of the occupation forces from Gaza and all the occupied Palestinian territories of 1967. Press with us and alongside us to prosecute the perpetrators of genocide and their accomplices in the crime.

Salute to our resilient people in Gaza, Long live our people’s struggle, long live global solidarity against occupation and colonialism, glory to the martyrs of our people everywhere, glory to the fighters facing attempts to silence them in Western and Arab countries.”

During this month, the network focuses its activities on holding workshops and seminars as part of the awareness campaign for early detection of breast cancer. They coordinate with health institutions to provide mammogram machines for early breast cancer detection.
